At Urban Village Medical Practice, we have adopted a strict prescribing policy for new and current patients registered with us who are taking certain types of medication.
Any new patient taking them will be required to have a review with a GP or pharmacist within 2 weeks of registering to assess the appropriateness and dosing of the following medications;
- opiate medications (such as oxycodone, morphine, and codeine)
- benzodiazepines (such as diazepam and nitrazepam)
- gabapentinoids (such as gabapentin and pregabalin).
In some circumstances, a prescription may be deemed inappropriate, in which case a reduction plan will be initiated.

Please be aware if you live at Heyrod Street, M1 2DY, this new build is not currently accurately portrayed on the map, if you live at this postcode you are still eligible to register with the practice.

Registering with the surgery
To register with the surgery:
- use the Register with a GP surgery service
When you register, it’s helpful to have your NHS number. You can use the NHS website to find your NHS number.
Text messaging service
When you register as a new patient, you will automatically opt in to our text service and you will receive your first text when you make your first routine appointment.
Practice staff will also use this service to inform you of normal test results and you may also receive health promotion information or reminders to book in for medication reviews etc.
If you would like to opt out of this service, please inform reception staff.
Temporary resident registration
How to register as a temporary resident
If you fall ill while away from home, or if you are not registered with a GP but need to see one, contact our reception team who will be able to assist you.
You can receive emergency treatment for 14 days. After that, you will have to register as a temporary resident or permanent patient.
Registration as a temporary resident allows you to be taken on to the practice’s list for up to three months. If you are registered with a practice but are away from your home area, you can register temporarily with a practice near where you are currently staying and still remain a patient of your registered practice.
Try to have the following information available when you attend your appointment for the first time:
- Details of your ongoing medical problems
- Details of your medical problems you have suffered in the past
- Details of any medicines that you are currently taking
- Details of any allergies
- Contact details of your registered or previous practice
You can register in person at reception. The registration process takes up to 5 working days once we have received all of your information. Unfortunately, the practice cannot provide you with a service until this is complete.
If you are registered elsewhere you will need to use your existing GP or ‘walk-service’ if you require medical attention.
Please do not leave your registration until the last moment.
