The Contraceptive Pill
The contraceptive pill is a very effective method of preventing pregnancy when taken correctly.
There are two main types:
Combined Pill
The combined pill contains both oestrogen and progesterone hormones.
Benefits include:
- Highly effective when taken correctly
- Can help regulate periods
- May reduce period pain and heavy bleeding
- Can improve acne in some people
The combined pill may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those who:
- Smoke and are aged over 35
- Have a history of blood clots
- Have certain migraine conditions
- Have specific medical conditions that make oestrogen unsuitable
Progesterone-Only Pill (POP)
The progesterone-only pill contains a single hormone and can often be used by people who cannot take oestrogen.
Benefits include:
- Suitable for many people who cannot take the combined pill
- Safe to use while breastfeeding
- Does not contain oestrogen
Possible side effects can include changes to bleeding patterns, headaches or breast tenderness.
The Contraceptive Injection
The contraceptive injection is a long-acting hormonal method that provides protection against pregnancy for up to 13 weeks per injection.
Benefits include:
- Very effective contraception
- No need to remember a daily pill
- May reduce period pain
- Some people find that their periods become lighter or stop altogether
Things to consider:
- Injections need to be repeated every 13 weeks
- Fertility can take several months to return after stopping
- Some people experience irregular bleeding, weight changes, headaches or mood changes
- It may not be suitable for everyone and will be discussed during your consultation
